Dave Mason – We Just Disagree

One of the most critically acclaimed musicians to date and a co-founder of rock super-group Traffic, singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Mason has finalized his most personal effort in years with the just announced release of a solo album, “26 Letters and 12 Notes” in October 2008.

The album has been six years in the making and was self-produced by Mason and recorded in his California home studio. A soulful blend of Mason’s rock and blues influences, the album contains 12 tracks all of which feature Mason’s singing and guitar handiwork. The title, 26 Letters and 12 Notes, refers to the number of letters in the alphabet and the number of notes involved in western music.

Mason feels a great sense of confidence in this album and calls it what he believes to be his best work yet.

“For me, I think it is probably one of the better albums I’ve ever done and I think I’m probably at the height of my vocal abilities right now.”

In 1967, English musician Dave Mason first found fame with the renowned rock group Traffic, the band with which he penned his classic hit “Feelin’ Alright.”

That was just the beginning of a musical journey that would span four decades and countless successes. Throughout his 40 year career, Mason has played with some of the most popular musicians of his era including Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Fleetwood Mac and Mama Cass Elliot. Mason is most well known for the hit single “Feelin’ Alright”, which he recorded with Traffic in 1968.

In 1969, Mason headed to the USA to embark upon a solo career which resulted in his increasing rise to stardom and the popular hits “Only You Know And I Know” And “We Just Disagree” along with “Every Woman,” from the platinum albums Alone Together and Let It Flow. Let It Flow, has gone multi-platinum in its time and “We Just Disagree,” which is featured on this album was a top-ten single.

Dave and his band, which consists of, Gerald Johnson (bass), John Sambataro (guitar), Alvino Bennett (drums) and Bill Mason (Keyboard), continue to travel and perform anywhere from 80-100 shows annually.

Andy McKee – Nakagawa-san

Here is one of the lesser known (but very enjoyable) original melodies of Andy McKee, played with his technically precise finger-style method. Nakagawa-san is from Andy’s Gates of Gnomeria CD, by CandyRat Records. A recent reviewer said:

Earlier this year, we enjoyed looking at Andy McKee’s delicate and delightful use of harmonics in another video – the song named “Heather’s Song”. Andy is probably most famous for his Guitar Drifting video, which has racked up an incredible 17 million views on YouTube.

Michael W. Smith – A New Hallelujah

Title track from the upcoming live worship album, “A New Hallelujah“, available October 28th, 2008. You’ll see the African Childrens Choir singing along in the video. Perhaps there are a few souls looking for hope after the financial troubles of the past week. This is “A New Hallelujah” – not Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah, or Handel’s grand old Hallelujah.

Hallelujah—means “Praise the LORD!” The word is made by putting together two Hebrew words: Hallelu (meaning “praise”) and Yah (for the name of God, “Yahweh,” or “the LORD”). Hallelujah is also the title of the Hollywood’s first all black film, produced in 1929 (the same year that Dr. Martin Luther King was born). Another interesting connection – October 28, 1929 was Black Monday in the stock market crash leading up to the Great Depression.

Look for A New Hallelujah, coming out on October 28, 2008.

Peggy Noonan got me thinking about bubbleheads, and epistemological self awareness.

This video is trying to sell something, but I’m thinking about the lessons it teaches on how to break out of your bubble.

Scooby-Do’s way of saying “Ruby Lovers Roundup”… A quick review of recent happenings (and writings) in the Ruby development community… and what a fun round up it is! The ruby rock stars are pushing agile development in sunny Florida … and the sunny Java guy is resting from Java to talk about Ruby RSpec RESTing and testing..

Tim Bray took a break from his other stuff to run more RSpec tests. Is he RESTing or testing, or both at the same time? He’s misusing RSpec (like Andy McKee abuses the guitar) — and that kind of innovation could lead to a cool new invention — but only if he plays with it long enough to discover something new and interesting.

Obie Fernandez is pushing paired programming the HashRocket way. Looks like they are having fun with it, and getting some good results. True believers in agile programming methods are already doing this, and everyone else is watching it closely, or closing their eyes, and trying to ignore it with one pragmatic eye still open.

David H. Hansson was not really “thinking out loud”, but he recently twittered:

getdropbox.com is exactly what I need to complete the two computer conundrum. Great execution. Can’t wait to be able to pay for it.

Babbling Bubbleheads

This unique YouTube video, by Candy Spilner and Allan Rubin, captures some interesting aspects of epistemology, conversation, language, art and music. The video may seem pointless, even stupid — at first glance.

Look closer. Observe carefully.

It depicts the babbling bubbleheads who (having no deep understanding of the shortness and fragility of life) continue talking about nothing important — until suddenly (pop) — life is over.

When was the last time you had a deep conversation about the meaning (and purpose) of life — with someone you love? Pop! Too late — your life is over. Babble, babble, babble … bloop! It mocks and ridicules post-modern foolishness, babbling bloggers, pontificating political pundits, promise-breaking politicians, TV talking-heads, shameless gossiping twitter-heads, and the continuing cacophony of all our careless conversations. In the babbling bubbleheads we see with penetrating perception – a reflection of ourselves.

Derek Trucks Band – Live at Detroit Jazz Fest

This is Derek Trucks and his band playing “I Wish I Knew” – recorded live at the 29th Detroit International Jazz Festival, September 1, 2008.

The full title of the song is “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free”.

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
I wish I could say all the things that I should say …

The song was written by Dr. Billy Taylor (along with Dick Dallas?) back in 1954. It was originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 on her Silk and Soul album. Billy Taylor also recorded his own instrumental version back in 1967. He said that he wrote the song (perhaps his best known composition) for his daughter Kim, describing it as a very spiritual song.

“I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” was used as a theme song on the BBC, a theme song for the 2004 Olympics, as music for a Coca-Cola commercial, and also served as an anthem for the civil-rights movement.

The video quality (on this youtube video) is not that great, but I think it’s the perfect way to close out this labor day weekend I Love Detroit series, and as Mike Mattison sings at the end of the video — Everyone Should Be Free!

It’s just like Donald Miller said in Blue Like Jazz: “jazz music was invented by the first generation out of slavery… it is very hard to put on paper; it is so much more a language of the soul … It is a music birthed out of freedom.”
