Is the Java train heading for a wreck? Years of API bloat, and fat passengers riding in first class, are taking a heavy toll on the Sun software engine. Is Java going the way of COBOL — being crushed by its own weight?

Erm…nope. At least I don’t see any sign of it.
I guess you’d have to elucidate for us mere mortals what you mean by “Years of API bloat, and fat passengers riding in first class” though (sigh).
As to COBOL, it was _never_ “crushed” (if that’s the way you choose to view it) by its own weight; simply by the fact that OO languages superceded it – the Darwinian law of programming languages.
The “weight” of code done in COBOL may, however, have something to do with the fact that banks have been so slow to move their systems over to the Web.
